OTIUM
“With “Otium”, Matteo Cibic invites a reflection on the philosophical contrast between otium—the time of rest—and negotium—the time of work and commitment. Through the exhibition, the artist creates a space to rediscover the value of leisure as a dimension of creativity, natural instinct, and hedonism. To achieve this, Cibic has selected works developed over the past few years.
Starting with large-format tree-like sculptures and continuing through the “Fragmenta” series of bas-reliefs in marble powder, “Lakapoliesis” (2024) presents itself as a project that redefines the relationship between animals and plants, subverting a long-established anthropocentric view. Through sculptures, installations, and prototypes, Cibic explores new perspectives on the plant world, drawing inspiration from historical figures such as Alexander Humboldt and Jagadish Chandra Bose, while integrating reflections on sustainability and the Western human relationship with space and time.
Cibic’s unmistakable signature style—eclectic and distinctive—is also evident in select pieces from the limited edition series “Paradiso Dreams” and “Domsai”, a captivating world inhabited by creatures that blend animal reality with fantasy. These characters, drawn from an imaginary bestiary, live in a carefree universe, often dressed in colorful and floral garments—symbols of kindness and joy.”
